Harvey Smith

Master Certified Coach

Before I was a coach,

I was a leader.

Before I was a coach, I was a leader.

I built the largest division of the largest textile converter company in the United States. I managed national sales teams, grew the business to a level that put me in rooms most people don’t get invited into, and did it while being told I was “too nice” to succeed at that level.

They were wrong. You can be kind and strong. You can lead with warmth and still deliver results. That belief runs through everything I do — because I lived it before I ever coached anyone on it.

Why Coaching

The industry I’d built my career in started moving offshore. I was at the top of my game, and the ground was shifting beneath me. I needed to figure out what came next — and I couldn’t do it alone.

I expected my wife - who is smarter than me - to be able to tell me what to do. She couldn’t. My colleagues couldn’t. I went circular for months, stuck in the same loop of uncertainty that I now see in so many of the leaders and professionals I work with.

That experience broke something open. I went back to school, became a certified career management coach, and started helping others navigate the same kind of transition I’d struggled through. From there, I moved into executive coaching, leadership development, and mentor coaching — and I’ve been doing this work for over two decades now.

I still wake up excited to do it.

What I Believe

I don’t believe people change. I believe they grow. A leader’s job is to deliver results and develop other leaders — and those aren’t separate things. When you develop the people around you, the results follow. I also know that leadership is hard and lonely, and that every leader needs someone they can trust who won’t judge them. That’s the relationship I build with every client.

The Work Behind the Work

The MCC — Master Certified Coach — is the highest credential the International Coach Federation awards. Roughly 2,500 coaches hold it worldwide. I earned mine, and I haven’t stopped since. I’m still taking classes at Queens University, still working alongside other master coaches and researchers, still pushing my own development forward. That’s not a marketing line — it’s how I’m wired. If I expect growth from the people I work with, I have to expect it from myself.

My clients have ranged from family businesses with three leaders to organizations with thousands of employees. I’ve partnered with the United Nations, worked across professional services, construction, financial services, healthcare, technology, and retail. The common thread isn’t the industry — it’s the challenge. Leaders dealing with communication that isn’t landing, teams that aren’t aligned, and decisions they’re avoiding.

One CEO told me I should write a book of the phrases his team kept using from our work together. Multiple organizations have independently started calling them the same thing: Harveyisms. I never planned that. But when the ideas are practical enough to stick, people carry them forward.

That’s what I care about most — the ripple effect. I help a leader get better, and they go out into their world and create a positive difference in the people around them. That’s the work.

Off the Clock

My wife Laurie and I are passionate rescuers of dogs and cats. The dedication to helping others doesn’t stop at the office.
